I guess it depends on the medium. Working big with colored pencils is quite deferent than doing so with watercolor, acrylic or oil. Or clay 😉
Oh yes, clay 😀 There are always color sticks for those who can’t work large with pencils, they are almost the size of pastel sticks, but that still does not help much. I think the issue is not with the tools, it’s in the head 🙂

No, I didn’t mean that I have to work big,just that it’s not the limitation of the tools of choice 🙂 I actually saw a colored pencil piece once that was several feet in both dimensions 🙂

Speaking of mental blocks – I am now contemplating a paining class in acrylics or oil – totally out of my comfort zone, but I like the teacher, so that might be a good place to start.
I am pretty sure I saw acrylic something by you, no? When I dubbed with acrylic myself, I couldn’t help but feel like I was painting with colored sour cream. Funny texture, even when diluted. Good luck with class!
Good memory! I did one acrylic but worked mostly with lines, so that doesn’t really count. I also combine acrylics with collage, but use fluid acrylics that have a very watercolory texture, only they dry annoyingly faster.
